Don’t Sacrifice Every Thing on the Altar of Your Certificates. Part 2

Never mistake getting a certificate for getting an education. A lot of us assume we’ve been educated because we attended some school, college or university but that doesn’t guarantee it. Schooling is not education. No matter what you may have been told, education is not synonymous with schooling. Schooling is done in school but education can happen anywhere. There can be education without schooling and schooling without education!

School teaches you 'what' to think. Education teaches you 'how' to think. Education is about growing an ability to learn, to think, to understand, to do and to take action. Schooling is about memorization, standardization and conformity. Schooling is all about preparing you for what society expects you to be. Education is about preparing yourself for who you need or wish to become.

“I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.” ~Mark Twain

We are at a point in history where we need to put the focus on learning rather than schooling and getting certificates. They are so many uneducated graduates in our world today. The best option you have is to become the master of your own education and achieve success in all areas of your life. Endeavor to get an education, not just certificates. Education could happen as soon as you see this post or when you watch a very ironic movie or read a classic book. Education is done almost every day.

This may be a hard pill to swallow for most people but schools are a money-making machines and corporate business in both public and private sectors. Schools are the best example of subscription-based services where you get a client one time and get rewards 5 to 10 years. Marketing tactics by schools make you feel schooling and certificates are a must for education. The fact is that, one can also get education by reading books or using online tools. There are many people who have been to school and are not really educated. There are also many educated people who never had the opportunity to attend school or finish one.

The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am not against schooling and certificates. Schooling is essential. It teaches you facts, figures, grammar, writing, etc...the kinds of basics that you need to exist in your everyday life as an adult. I’ll advise everyone to have some sort of basic schooling. If you make an effort to understand what I’m saying, you can actually gain a great deal of education from "schooling" but never forget there is so much more to education than the classroom, textbooks, lectures, exams and certificates. Schooling and certificates can earns you some cash at a job but education makes the world a better place all together.

Here is a take home. If what schooling offers cannot be applied to solve societal problems, then education has not taken place. If what schooling offers cannot instigate change in your own personal life, then education has not occurred. If what schooling offers is for you to come out and still depend fully on the system, then education has not taken place. If what schooling offers cannot help you stand on your own two feet without depending on someone or a salary, then education has not taken place. If what schooling offers is for graduates to come back home with prestigious certificates but still look up to their parents for daily bread, then education has not taken place.

You are not educated if all you got from school is a certificate. Real education should help solve problems, if not your country’s problems then at the very least your own problems.
